I think Google will soon open up their office in Indonesia as Yahoo did recently in the Philippines. Google has been the overwhelmingly dominant search engine in Indonesia, my guess is more than 90 percent bahasa Indonesia search. It’s not as good in other markets, beaten in Chinese market by Baidu, in Russian (cyrillic) by Yandex, in Arabic by Sina, and even in Japan it’s second to Yahoo.
If Google is to take advantage its leadership position in Indonesia, it has to tap it now. Google ad revenue has been less than stellar last year, especially due to saturation in the US Market (and current recession there). For the first time in history, last year it’s global ad revenue surpassed it’s US. Google has to broaden more agressively its markets beyond the US. Indonesia has the potential and is among its low hanging fruits as Google is very popular here with its adsense model.
The crave of Indonesian market on online advertising aggregator has given rise to kumpulblogger and other local ad aggregator. If Google is too cautious about getting into Indonesia, it will only give leeway to its small competitors to become the next challenger, the way it has happened with Baidu, Yandex, Sina and numerous other. All Indonesians need is a better search engine in bahasa, something that Google is not. (I am for one is most disappointed with many of google results/SERPS in bahasa. It’s not as relevant as SERPS in English).
